I thought Rijeka was pretty mellow, after Zagreb. We had a kitchen so market time was great. More sun! Warmer! We applied our tourist acumen and let the rental agency know how “disappointed” we were with our first lodging (tiny, with no window whatsoever, our very own prison cell) and managed to get an upgrade for free, probably because all hoteliers live in fear of getting bad online reviews from rich Americans.
Our micro-balcony was over the main pedestrian walkway, so we could hear street musicians below. Little booths begin to appear everywhere for the Christmas markets.
