On the train to Belgrad I made a cheat sheet for Cyrillic. Totally humbling, since I can barely copy the characters of the alphabet with enough detail (little tails and lines on the ends of letters make a difference). Adventure!
Our first day here. We went on a walking tour of 20th Century Belgrade with a 26-year old woman who had 1) amazing fluency in English, 2) amazing perspectives on Serbia’s confoundingly complex history, and who was willing to talk about Serbian perspectives on the Yugoslavian break-up/ Homeland War, including what reconcilliation requires. Wandered, ate some of the BEST bűrek yet, elbow to elbow with locals, wandered. Endedup at the Fortress, overlooking the confluence of the Sava and Danube Rivers, atsunset. Coal-smog makes for lovely sunsets.
Two more days here. Stay tuned…
