As a Luddite tech geek, I have resigned myself to a smartphone, especially when travelling: android. I am totally offline as far as cell service here, but I do have wi-fi, and a phone plan that lets me call and text to the US as usal. this seems about 90% perfect. The only thing I lack is the ability to call Euro landlords, and find my exact location when out and about. (Doug is packing a phone with an international package, so we use that when, for example, we are standing outside our room at 8 PM and want the person with the key to actually show up and let us IN!)
me.maps
This is what takes care of my street navigation. With it I can download topo/ street maps of EVERYWHERE! when I have wifi, and then use the maps offline. I can even search (offline!) for restaurants, many museums and such.
i-translate
This lacks a bit lacking when translating from other languages into English from what I see on signs, names of meats/fruits/ veggies in the market etc. It is great for politely asking detailed directions, permissions, info by showing someone the translated sentence or question on my phone.
(I really dislike google translate because it so dominates the linguistic world online. Will not rant about this here.)
American Heritage Dictionary (offline!)
My desert island app: some word history, priority for American usage. Keeps me sane to read differnces in definitions (recent example: pragmatic vs. practical).
