All three of us (Doug, Maggie, and I) are big fans of touring ports by boat. Our last tour was of Gdansk in pre-COVID times, which was cool because Gdansk is such an ancient port and rebuilt itself post-WWII with reconstructions of many of its old structures. (Note: we also toured Rotterdam’s Port with or friend Mike more than a few years ago.)
We hustled ourselves down to the section of the North Elbe river where tourist boats launched, eye-balled fish-for-lunch possibilities along the quay, and secured most excellent seats on the bot deck.
Can you say BIG SHIPS?
One of my favorite sites was a gargantuan metal scrap processing center, where big-ass machinery was chewing up old containers and more. I’ll get a picture up when I figure out where it is.
I had been reciting a fun fact I picked up in reading about Hamburg: it has 24 canals and more bridges than Amsterdam and Venice (I think) combined. We’d picked the tour that went up a few canals as well as touring the port, so we got oriented to the city from the water, amidst lots of cool views.

Port of Hamburg Part 2 will be a page with pretty much nothing but pix from our boat tour. An eyefull for sure.
